According to security expert Gavin De Becker, who wrote The Gift of Fear, the best thing you can do to protect yourself against unforseen danger is to be keenly aware, in the present moment, of your own response to a situation.
We definitely ‘know’ more than our minds put into words, and our ‘whole being’ seems to know, intuitively, when there is a threat…..but most people are so inattentive to their own being, or so lacking in capacity to be present enough NOW to pick up on and process cues from the environment.
We all tend to discount what we ‘know’ in this poetic way….the verbal mind tries to process it and ends up talking us out of responding appropriately…..after all, we don’t want to be a)stupid, b)discourteous, c)hysterical females, right??? You actually REDUCE your ability to sense danger if you are tense, nervous, fearful.
Be still, take heart, hope in the Lord, then be wise as serpents and gentle as doves!!! The take home point on this is, be present to your own affect, don’t walk through the world thinking about your to-do list, or about tomorrow, but ATTEND to what is present here, now, and to your own ‘gut feeling’ about whether you are in danger!!!
